Sean Kingston Grows Up In New 'Fire Burning' Video
By: muzikspace - 06-16-2009 5:53:44 AM
Earlier this year, Kingston leaked "I'm at War," an overwrought, Auto-Tuned track that featured a cameo by none other than Lil Wayne. Somewhat surprisingly, the song failed to gain any real traction, which sent everyone scurrying back to their respective laboratories and boardrooms, and eventually led to "Fire Burning," which has officially been dubbed the official first single from Tomorrow. (Officially.) read more...

Gray-Suited D.J.s Mix It Up With Dancehall and Multimedia
By: muzikspace - 06-16-2009 5:36:45 AM
For an hour after Major Lazer was scheduled to begin its set at S.O.B.’s in the small hours of Sunday morning, the screen at the back of the stage was displaying footage from what appeared to be Carnival in Brazil while a D.J., hidden out of sight, played soca, dancehall reggae and R&B. By about the halfway mark this began to feel like a brilliant conceptual stunt. read more...

Callaloo, a wonderful vegetable to grow during the hot Florida summer
By: muzikspace - 06-11-2009 4:54:42 AM
Callaloo is grown extensively by people living in the Caribbean islands and has its origins with African slaves. It is very popular in Trinidad-Tobago, Jamaica, Guyana, Asia, Dominican Republic, Haiti, West Indies, Barbados and Bahamas. It is believed that the African slaves brought it with them when they were relocated to lands far away from their birthplace. They were very wise in doing so as it grows prolifically in poor soils. read more...

What's Next for Caribbean Offshore Centers?
By: muzikspace - 06-11-2009 4:46:45 AM
A year ago, the real estate boom was in full swing. About 17,500 units—mostly high-rise condos—were ready to come on the market. In some cases, a condo would double in value during the time it was being built. Some developers even sold the same unit twice. For instance, a developer would sell a unit for US$500,000, and then sell it a second time for US$1 million. If the first buyer complained, the developer would refund his or her deposit. read more...

Ziggy Marley wants to get in touch with the future leaders of our nation: That’s why his latest release is a children’s CD.
Family Time, released last month, is a reggae-flavored kids album that Marley hopes will connect with those he says can best evoke change. The disc features vocals from three generations of Marleys: Ziggy’s 3-year-old daughter, Judah; his mother (and Bob Marley’s widow) Rita; and sister Cedella.

Dis is My Culcha or Is This My Culture?
By: muzikspace - 06-08-2009 7:52:49 AM
The world laughed when it was published abroad that a Jamaican man had attempted to hijack a passenger plane from the island’s tourism capital of Montego Bay recently. “What? Why would he want to leave a herb smoking paradise to go to Cuba or to North American snow?” they suggested in their snicker. It’s the way they see Caribbean culture: a happy frolicking, steel pan and reggae-playing people, who sometimes go crazy fighting over weed; but hijacking airplanes?! No way! it’s too complicated. read more...

Give Guantanamo Back To Cuba
By: muzikspace - 06-04-2009 7:19:26 AM
Guantanamo is the name of a Caribbean inlet in Southeastern Cuba that provides one of the biggest and best-sheltered bays in the world — perfect for a naval base. Guantanamo today is also the name of a major presidential headache. The prison there houses some 240 "detainees," as they are called, and President Obama has promised to shut it down but has so far not found many countries willing to accept the detainees, least of all this country, whose leaders say, almost in chorus, "not in my backyard." read more...

Surfing Jamaica ideal for beginners
By: muzikspace - 05-02-2009 5:05:04 AM
We had both come a long way to make this rendezvous on a tiny Caribbean beach. My journey spanned thousands of kilometres from an icy Calgary airport, through falling latitudes and rising temperatures until, finally, I sat on a banged-up, rented surfboard bobbing in the clear, warm waters off Jamaica's east coast. read more...

Some Orlando-area black businesses succeed despite recession
By: muzikspace - 05-02-2009 5:03:08 AM
Black businesses, even in the best of times, have higher rates of failure than white-owned firms. They tend to be smaller and underfunded with lower sales and less money in reserve than white-owned business, according to researchers. "A lot of what you need to do, you needed to do before you got to the recession," said Malik Ali, president of the Florida Minority Supplier Development Council in Orlando. "And that might be tough if you are barely making a profit or losing money." But there are exceptions. Here are three minority business owners who are surviving the recession — and how they're doing it. read more...
