| Cuba's other revolution is green, not red |
| In Copenhagen they are debating how to end deforestation, but in Cuba's Pinar del Río they were replanting 50 years ago, creating lush, unspoilt valleys Birds and butterflies are swooping above us and, as our taxi reaches the summit of this forest road just 40 minutes from the heat and noise of Havana, the view opens to an undulating landscape painted every shade of green. Before Castro these hills were dusty yellow and brown scrub. read more... |

| Confident Carnival orders new cruise ship |
| Carnival Cruise Lines, in a bullish move for the recession-battered cruise industry, ordered a 130,000-ton cruise ship -- marking the first new cruise ship order in more than 20 months. Miami-based Carnival agreed to pay Italian cruise shipbuilder Fincantieri in dollars -- rather than euros, the standard currency for the European shipyards -- to protect against a slide in the U.S. dollar that would drive up the cost of the 3,690-passenger ship. read more... |

| Substance of trade deal on bananas reached-diplomats |
The European Union and two blocs of developing countries have reached a deal on bananas, ending the world's oldest trade dispute and removing a barrier to a new agreement to open up global commerce, diplomats said on Tuesday. But some minor details still remain to be ironed out, and the deal will not be ready for signing until later this week or next week, they said.

| A Historical and Modern Caribbean Destination – Cartagena, Colombia |
| Nestled in an ancient wall is the beautiful town of Cartagena. Located in Colombia’s northern coastline, it is one of the major ports on the Caribbean. While this tropical town is bustling with parties, festivals and exciting nightlife it also harbors a tranquil side through narrow streets where you will find flower gardens, balconies and courtyards and beautifully designed, ancient colonial buildings. The Caribbean coast on one side also offers scenic spots and peaceful beaches where you relax and enjoy the view. read more... |

| Old colonial ties disappearing in the Caribbean |
| In the wake of a ho-hum royal visit to Canada by Prince Charles and his not-so-popular-new-wife Camilla, the Canadians are wondering whether they want the hapless Prince of Wales as their next head of state after the death of the quite popular Queen Elizabeth. The Canadian press has been full of assessments of the monarchy and what it means as a symbol of the continuation of colonial relations that seem oh-so-19th century. read more... |

| Invisible Lives of Caribbean Nannies |
On any given Sunday in Central Park, upscale Washington D.C. parks, or in the parking lots of frou-frou stores in Livingston, NJ you become aware that many upper class white women do not raise their children.
Often times, it is a Caribbean woman who must take care of other peoples' children six or seven days out of the week, while leaving her children behind or at home to be cared for by extended family. read more... |

| Another Caribbean Resort Goes Belly Up |
| Pristine beaches, villas designed by famous architects and the endorsement of Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta-Jones wasn’t enough to keep yet another Caribbean resort from going belly up. Lenders put the massive Dellis Cay development in the Turks and Caicos islands into receivership on Thursday, roughly a week after developer Turks Ltd. stopped construction. The resort was to include 25-room hotel, 78 for-sale condominiums and 17 villas, all managed by Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group. read more... |

| Haiti continuing to rely on food handouts |
| Haiti's agricultural sector is considered to be one of the most inefficient in the world. But despite its best efforts, hundreds of thousands of Haitians continue to rely on food handouts. As Teresa Bo reports from Gonaives in Haiti, last year's devastating hurricane season has only made matters there worse. read more... |
