Automated Teller Machines (ATMs) have become an essential part of everyday banking, allowing millions of people to withdraw cash, check balances, and perform financial transactions quickly. While modern ATMs equipped with EMV chip technology are significantly more secure than traditional magnetic stripe systems, cybercriminals continue to develop new techniques to steal financial information.
One of the most concerning threats is EMV shimming. Unlike traditional skimming, which targets magnetic stripe data, shimming devices are designed to intercept information from a card's EMV chip while it is inserted into an ATM or payment terminal. Although EMV chips make it much harder to clone cards for fraudulent use, shimming remains a serious concern because criminals often combine it with stolen PINs and other fraud techniques.
Understanding how shimming works—and learning how to recognize warning signs before inserting your card—can greatly reduce your risk of becoming a victim.
